Gifts of Shares and securities or land and buildings:
You can get income tax relief when you donate quoted shares and securities,
land or buildings to charity. For example, if you donate shares worth £1,000
you could reduce your income tax bill by £400. No capital gains tax
will be due on the gift.
The fund could be set up in your own
name, or that of your family or your company.
You can even suggest the particular kinds
of causes you would most like to help, and how much you want to be involved
in making grants.
Since April 2000 the tax relief available
on donations of most quoted company shares has become very generous.
Such donations are not only exempt from
capital gains tax, but they can now reduce your income tax bill too. The total
tax saving could be as high as 80%.
For anyone with shares that have risen
in value over the years, and for all higher rate taxpayers, this can
be a particularly attractive way to give.
You can even claim tax relief if you sell
shares to a charity for less than their current market rate.
Companies can likewise claim relief against
corporation tax.

Alternatively you can approach ShareGift...
The charity ShareGift (registered charity 1052686) specialises in taking very
small holdings of shares - a useful solution as it is often not worth selling
small numbers of shares yourself!
By donating your unwanted shares in this way, you can help ShareGift to generate
funds for charities all over the UK including the Birmingham Foundation, as
you can nominate us to receive a future donation from ShareGift when you send
in your shares.
