Fire Service BTEC - 12.08.10
Nine young People aged between 15 and 17 have taken part in a 2 week course at Tipton Fire Station. Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Award in Fire & Rescue Services in the Community. The course funded through Fair Share, a part of the National Lottery has meant that the students have been able to take part in this trail blazing course.
The course has been run by Sandwell Youth Programme, only a handful of students have taken part in this course in the country and never from a Fire Station in Summer Holidays. It is definitely a first for West Midlands Fire Service and probably in the Country.
The students took part in theory and practical training around the areas of; The Role of the Fire & Rescue Service, Using 3 items of Fire Service Equipment, Identifying Hazards and Risks and using safety measures to reduce these risks, learning about how Anti Social Behaviour can affect the Fire & Rescue Service and the community and about initiatives that the Fire Service carry out to try to combat them. Whilst working through these modules the students also demonstrated the basic skills needed to work in the Fire & Rescue Service including; Teamwork, Problem solving and Communication.
This Friday (13th August) will see the students carry out a pass out parade at Tipton Fire Station 1pm. The students will do a practical display of their news skills, give a presentation to an audience about a Fire safety Initiative and finally be presented with their certificates.
If you have time to attend this event that would be a great way to advertise and celebrate this course. This course will be available for others to take part in from September.

Youngsters set to sparkle thanks to Urban Living funding! - 29.7.10
Young people living in Handsworth are being given their chance to shine thanks to a £5,000 grant from Urban Living.
Birmingham Carnival Youth & Arts Development project needed funding to cover the cost of creative arts workshops. Project Co-ordinator Professor Black teaches local young people the art of designing, making and decorating costumes using vibrant feathers, sequins and beads.
The organisation started 8 years ago but Professor Black has been involved with designing costumes for the last 26 years. The group started with 30 dancers and now has over 300!
The group acts as a resource centre providing young people and adult groups with the advice and technical skills required to make their own costumes for the Birmingham Carnival and other events. Once the costumes are made by Professor Black and his trainees, he takes his troupe of dancers to carnivals across the UK.

Fair Share volunteer Fred Perry receives honour from the Queen - 29.7.10
Fair Share panel member Fred Perry received an MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his decades of service to his local community.
Most of his service had been done quietly and unrewarded. After the War Mr. Perry joined the Royal British Legion and became a fundraiser. While serving as a member of his local council, Mr. Perry helped set up the Great Bridge Traders' Association and later joined the community forum.

John Buckle, Project Manager for the Black Country at BCF said: "Fred Perry MBE is a worthy recipient of this award. His services to the Tipton and Great Bridge community have been selfless and determined. He is a panel member for Fair Share Trust in Great Bridge and provides invaluable knowledge of the area.
